Description
Western Governors University (WGU) is a nonprofit online university in the United States that has developed a distinctive approach to higher education. Founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, WGU was created with a clear mission: to expand access to high-quality, affordable education for students who need greater flexibility than the traditional college model can provide. Today, the university serves learners through an online, competency-based education model designed particularly well for working adults, career changers, and students balancing education with professional and personal responsibilities.
One of the defining characteristics of Western Governors University is its fully online learning environment. Rather than requiring students to attend traditional classroom sessions at fixed times, WGU allows learners to organize their studies around their own schedules.
This approach can be particularly valuable for working professionals, parents, military personnel, and other students whose responsibilities make conventional full-time study difficult. Students can generally access their learning materials and complete coursework according to their individual schedules, allowing education to fit more naturally into their existing lives.
